An iconic photo of Muhammad Ali will stand tall as a statue in Lewiston.

Nearly 60 years ago, that photo was taken at what is now the Lewiston Colisée in May 1965.

Muhammad Ali and Sonny Liston duked it out for a championship rematch in Maine.

Now, work is underway on Main Street in Lewiston to construct a 10-foot statue in the likeness of Ali, from the photo of that historic moment as he stood over Sonny Liston.

“Bring it on. I mean we need more to uplift the scenery a little bit here. It’s getting a little drab, a little depressing. So, I guess anything to bring a few smiles to the place,” local Shannan Dunn said.

The statue will be unveiled on May 25, 2025 — the 60th anniversary of Ali’s victory.
