A man who was driving the wrong way on Interstate 95 on Tuesday died after colliding head-on with another vehicle.

Police started receiving reports at about 11 a.m. of a driver headed north on the southbound side of the divided highway near mile 142 in Burnham.

The crash occurred at mile 147 in Pittsfield, state police said in a news release.

State police investigators determined that the wrong-way driver, Ivan Cunningham, 82 of Corinna, in a 2013 Ford Focus, collided head-on with a 2023 Ford F-150 driven by Nathaniel Blanchard, 27, of Stetson.

Cunningham was pronounced dead at the scene. Blanchard was flown by Lifeflight helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center with injuries that state police said are not considered life-threatening.

The stretch of I-95 was closed for about two hours while police investigated the crash.
