According to Dexter assistant fire chief Will Lovejoy, the fire was called in around 6:30 p.m. Saturday and when firefighters arrived, the fire was already well involved.
There are two buildings on the property, he explained, a house and a garage a few feet away with a second-story apartment.
The fire occurred in the apartment. The tenants were not home at the time, he said.
Lovejoy said fire crews were able to douse the fire quickly. “We had a really good fire attack, and were actually able to save about three-quarters of the garage,” he said. The house wasn’t involved in the blaze.
The fire is still under investigation but it appears to have been caused by heat tape that was being used to keep pipes from freezing, said Lovejoy.
