Police are investigating human remains that were found Saturday afternoon in Lewiston.

“Initial findings indicate that the remains have been there for an extended period of time,” according to Shannon Moss, spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety. “There is no danger to the public.”

The remains were found in Garcelton Bog at the end of Russell Street by a nearby resident, who contacted authorities.

The remains have been taken to the state medical examiner’s office in Augusta for identification. The Lewiston Police Department is investigating the findings with the assistance of the Maine State Police.
