State offices will be closed on Thursday in anticipation of a winter storm.

Gov. Janet Mills declared the closure saying the snow, sleet and ice in the forecast are expected to make for hazardous driving conditions across the state.

“Please check on elderly neighbors who might need help shoveling snow, and if you need to drive, always give room to first responders and plow truck drivers working to keep Maine people safe,” Mills said in a statement.

Snowfall is expected to start Thursday morning and continue into the evening with more accumulation in northern Maine, according to the National Weather Service.

Aroostook County and some central, inland parts of the state could get 5 to 9 inches of snow mixed with ice. Southern Maine is expected to get 2 to 4 inches of precipitation.
