One person died and four were injured in an early Thursday morning fire in Portland.

The fire broke out about 1:14 a.m. at an Olympia Street home, according to Sean Donaghue, a spokesperson for the Portland Fire Department.

When firefighters arrived, they found the one-and-half-story, single-family structure “heavily involved.” Crews were forced to evacuate the building because of the “intense fire conditions” and the home’s “failing structural integrity,” Donaghue said Thursday.

One of the five occupants died in the fire, while four others were taken to the hospital for treatment. Donaghue said two firefighters were injured in the battle but didn’t require hospitalization.

The fire was under control by 4:15 a.m., and crews remained at the scene Thursday morning.

The Maine fire marshal’s office is investigating the cause of the blaze.

No additional information was immediately available.
