University of Maine sophomore goalie Albin Boija has been chosen as a second team All-American for the East region. He was previously named a second team All-Hockey East selection and the league tournament Most Valuable Player.

He is the fifth UMaine goaltender to be named an All-American along with Mike Dunham, Blair Allison, Jimmy Howard and Jeremy Swayman.

He was also one of four finalists for the Mike Richter Award which goes to the nation’s top Division I goalie.

Boston College sophomore Jacob Fowler won the Richter Award and signed a three-year entry-level contract with Montreal, which had drafted him in the third round.

Current Boston Bruins goalie Swayman is the only Black Bear to win the Richter Award (2019-20).

Boija went 23-8-6 this season and his 1.82 goals-against average was fifth best among goalies at 64 Division I schools and his .928 save percentage was eighth-best. He was also fifth in wins.

His four shutouts were tied for fourth-most and the All-New England selection became just the second Hockey East goalie and 17th nationwide since the start of the 2002-03 season to register a GAA below 1.85 through his first 37 games of a season.

The Sundsvall, Sweden native’s 1.82 goals against average ranks second all-time in program history for a single-season, trailing only Howard’s 1.19 in 2003-04.

He held opponents to two goals or less 27 times and to one goal or less 14 times.

This marks the 44th All-America selection in program history and the first since Swayman in 2019-20.

Boija said last week that he will be returning to UMaine in the fall, and is excited for next season.

“The opportunity we have here is amazing, and I want to keep maturing and building on that before I leave,” Boija said.
