Maine State Police arrested a man in the central Maine town of Benton after getting 911 calls that he was walking down the road recklessly firing a pistol, including toward homes.

Troopers were called to Unity Road at about 11:30 a.m. and quickly found the man, identified as Joseph Costa, 32, who is currently homeless, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said.

Costa was found to have a 9mm semi-automatic handgun in his possession, Moss said.

He was brought to a local hospital for evaluation and later to Kennebec County Jail where he was charged with 12 counts of aggravated reckless conduct with a firearm and one count of discharging a firearm near a dwelling. He was denied bail and is awaiting his initial court appearance, Moss said.

No injuries were reported, Moss said.
