Matchbox Twenty delivered the coldest message in “Rest Stop,” which to me sums up President Donald Trump perfectly: “While you were sleeping / Well, I was listening to the radio and wondering what you’re dreaming/When it came to mind that I didn’t care.”
Protest all you want, the bottom line is that he apparently doesn’t care what you think or feel.
The appointment of unqualified cabinet members, the dismantling of federal agencies and programs, the withdrawal of support for traditional foreign friends, the threats of investigation and prosecution, the extraction of legal residents without due process, the withholding of funds from states and universities, the bankrupting of people through the imposition of tariffs among other tactics, and the blatant defiance of judicial orders are all of a piece intended to upset and distract while the executive branch grabs power from Congress and the judiciary.
Many Democrats blithely contend this chaos will be corrected in the 2026 midterms. I am not so hopeful. I think these and other actions like taking over the Postal Service to restrict mail-in voting and redistricting to guarantee permanent Republican majorities are intended to eliminate or nullify elections.
A coming constitutional crisis? It’s already here. It came while we were sleeping.
