A New Brunswick man was sentenced on Monday to serve one year in prison followed by three years of supervised release for illegally crossing the international border and bringing a controlled substance.

In September 2024, U.S. Border Patrol agents stopped Nathan Paul Curran-McQuade, 31, in the Aroostook County town of Caswell for allegedly entering the country illegally from Canada, according to court documents cited by the U.S. Department of Justice in a news release.

Caswell is the next town north of Limestone. The international border runs along its eastern edge.

Curran-McQuade was driving an ATV on a trail bordering Canada that was marked with international boundary signs, the DOJ said. Agents found that he had approximately 14 grams of methamphetamine on him and marijuana in a mason jar in his backpack.

He pleaded guilty on Jan. 21.
