A former church that has been transformed into a single-family home is for sale near downtown Rockland.

The property has two bedrooms, two full bathrooms and nearly 2,200 square feet of living space. The home is unassuming from the outside, but boasts high ceilings and an open floor plan with a large kitchen inside.

The primary bedroom is located off the kitchen and living room area while an open loft space, accessible by a staircase that can be raised or lowered, holds an additional bedroom space or office.

The home’s other features include stainless steel appliances, wood floors and a clawfoot bathtub.

Priced at $549,000, the property is more expensive than the average cost of a home in Rockland, which sat at slightly more than $363,000 as of Monday, according to Zillow. Prices in the coastal town have dropped slightly since hitting a five-year high in October 2024 when the average cost of a home in the area was more than $374,000.

Built in 1962, the home sits on the corner of Broadway and Ranklin Street and is a 15-minute walk from downtown Rockland.

The current owner bought the building in 2016 and began renovating it to be his primary residence, said Joseph Sortwell of LandVest, the listing agent for the property.

“He’s a very handy individual and it was something he saw the vision for,” Sortwell said. “It was his labor of love and now it’s time for him to move on to the next project.”

The property has a separate first floor apartment with a private entrance and parking on a different street, and both sides have private fenced back yards on a 0.27-acre lot.
