Two Brunswick police officers called for a report of a “large bird” on the roadside Monday night were surprised to find themselves chasing an emu.

The flightless bird, which had apparently slipped out of its owner’s yard, made a brief dash for the road before settling in the parking lot of Mid Coast Hospital, the department said in a Facebook post that includes dash cam footage of the emu running across the parking lot.

According to the clock on the dash cam, the encounter happened just before 11:30 p.m.

Two officers waited with the bird until its owners arrived to collect it, the department said.
