Police charged a man who climbed a roof in Bangor and refused to come down for more than 7 hours on Wednesday.

Stephen Nason, 39, of Bangor was arrested after a standoff with police that started at 4 a.m. and ended at about 11:30 a.m.

During that time, when temperatures went above 90 degrees, Nason made an “acrobatic” leap to a bucket lift that had been raised to give him water and grabbed a fire department axe, according to Bangor Fire Chief Geoffrey Low.

Nason was eventually taken into protective custody and brought to Penobscot County Jail on a probation violation charge early Wednesday afternoon after being medically cleared at a local hospital, Bangor police Sgt. Jason McAmbley said.

Nason, who has a history of creating standoffs with local police dating to 2011, was also charged with aggravated criminal mischief, a Class C felony; and creating a police standoff, McAmbley said.

McAmbley said the aggravated charge was because the amount of damage Nason did with the axe while he was on the roof exceeded $2,000.
