Goose River Farm in Belfast will close at the end of August.

The store, located at 29A Belmont Ave. behind the Belfast Soup Kitchen, sells a variety of fresh and frozen local meats.

In a note posted to Facebook, owners Chris and Lynn Boynton said they made the decision to close after more than 10 years based on the rising cost of owning and operating a small business in “Maine’s very unfriendly business economy.”

The Boyntons said the high cost of utilities and taxes took a toll on the business, “and we would not want to raise the prices as much as we would need to in order to make up the difference.”

The business is taking its last orders from customers on Aug. 27.
