Maine beaches from Ogunquit to the midcoast saw a record number of piping plovers this year.

The town of Scarborough said that beaches from Ogunquit to Georgetown had 175 nesting pairs, a new record.

The town also believes the number of fledglings, which means birds that have survived long enough to fly, will also reach an all-time high.

Scarborough’s four beaches saw an increase in nesting pairs, but town officials said that fewer birds lived long enough to fly.
