A plane crashed on Flagstaff Lake in western Maine early Monday afternoon, causing minor injuries to the pilot and his only passenger, police said.
The crash, which happened in Dead River Township, came two days after a pontoon boat flipped on the lake and killed two New York women.
According to Shannon Moss, spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety, the 1956 Cessna 170B float plane was attempting to take off from the lake when it crashed. It was reported at around 1:30 p.m.
The pilot, 62-year-old Stephen Vorpagel of Readfield and one passenger, were both rescued and brought to shore, Moss said. They suffered minor injuries and abrasions.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Other agencies involved in the response included the Maine Warden Service, local rescue workers, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, the Maine Department of Environmental Protection and the Federal Aviation Administration.
ABC affiliate WMTW 8 shared a photo that a witness reportedly took of the plane, in which it appears to be floating upside down in the water.
The crash happened just two days after two women died and a third was critically injured when the pontoon boat flipped on the lake, reportedly after its bow began to dip into the water and the driver tried to raise it.
Farhana Nasir, 53, of Selden, New York, and Kiran Akbar, 23, of Lake Grove, New York, died at the scene. Noor Nasir, 22, of New York, was flown to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in critical condition.
