I respect Gov. Janet Mills very much, and I believe her competence after former Gov. Paul LePage benefitted Maine in countless ways. I think she should stop considering  a U.S. Senate race and gracefully step aside.

Decision time was months ago. I deplore ageist bias, but believe that Mills’ age alone would defeat her. I think the vicious GOP would hound her with the trans issue, unfairly and repeatedly.

I wish I were wrong. An experienced governor would improve the Senate.

But In these political times, with President Donald Trump setting the tone and destroying nearly everything honorable and admirable about our country, I don’t think Mills could beat Sen. Susan Collins.
