Bangor and Brewer firefighters carried a cat out of an apartment fire in Bangor Wednesday afternoon.

Firefighters responded to a call at Cedarwoods Apartments at 818 Ohio St. after home repair workers started a fire with soldering, Bangor Fire Chief Geoff Low said.

Low said the cause of the fire was “just one of those things that happens.”

The fire spread to channels in the walls and reached from the first to the third floor of the apartment building, affecting three apartments, Low said. Firefighters held the fire’s spread to walls and ceilings and no tenants were hurt, he said.

One family’s cat stuck in an apartment was bundled up and carried out of the building by firefighters, Low said.

“That’s one positive out of it. So a family is able to keep its pet,” he said.

Firefighters handed off the cat to a Northern Light ambulance, where it was given “animal first aid,” Low said.

Firefighters used a smaller respirator on the cat to ensure it had oxygen while taking it out of the building. Low said the ambulance had a similar device that would be used.

Tenants should be able to return to their apartments soon with minimal cleaning and repairs needed, Low said. He didn’t know how many people were affected by the fire.
