Northport voters will choose a new Select Board member at their June town meeting to serve out the remainder of Breanna Pinkham Bebb’s term.

Bebb resigned after being appointed this month by Gov. Janet Mills to the Waldo County Commission, to fill a vacancy after longtime commissioner Betty Johnson died in January.

The change in positions by Bebb reflects the urgency felt by county officials and area residents to resolve the county’s budget crisis, in which the county has yet to approve a 2026 budget as it grapples with an expected double-digit increase.

Bebb’s term on the commission runs until the end of 2026, but she intends to run for reelection in November.

The person elected to Bebb’s former Select Board seat will hold office until June 2027, when her term was scheduled to end.

Nominations for the position can be submitted between March 1 and April 10, said Amy Eldridge, Northport’s town clerk.

Northport will operate with two Select Board members — Jeanine Tucker and Molly Schauffler — until the seat is filled in June, but Eldridge said she didn’t expect the vacancy to cause any problems.
