The Whale’s Tooth Pub in Lincolnville Beach has been sold, more than a year and a half after it closed down, documents show.
The property, originally listed at $1.5 million, was bought for $950,000 by Checkers LLC, a corporation with a Boston address, according to documents filed with the state.
The pub’s sale is the latest change for the small beachside community which, in recent years, has seen its iconic Lobster Pound restaurant badly damaged by a storm and reopened as a gift shop only, and the relocation of McLaughlin’s Lobster Shack across Rt. 1 to make way for expanded parking at the ferry terminal. Further change is on the horizon as the state revamps the ferry terminal this year and the town grapples with the impact of sea level rise on the vulnerable stretch of Rt. 1 next to the popular beach.
The pub property includes the restaurant, a three-bedroom residence, 40 parking spaces and more than 300 feet of waterfront, according to a real estate listing. It also includes grandfathered waterfront rights, which would allow a future owner to build a pier, the listing said.
It wasn’t immediately clear what the new owners have planned for the property. David Kinney, Lincolnville’s town administrator, did not have any more information on the property’s new owners.
The pub first opened in 1994. Its most recent owners, Chris and Martha Nickerson announced in October 2024 that they would close the business in order to spend more time with family out of state.
A second property owned by the Nickersons – The Northport Inn & Lodge in Belfast – is also for sale, listed at $1.18 million. The couple bought the property in 2021 in order to provide housing for their employees and those of other businesses.
