The world is filled with archrivalries. The Red Sox vs. the Yankees. Sherlock Holmes vs. Dr. Moriarty. Mountain Dew vs. Mellow Yellow. Maggie Simpson vs. the Baby with the One Eyebrow.
There’s another quiet struggle that plays out in towns and cities across this great state and nation: ducklings vs. storm drains.

Sara Brodeur and a companion were passing by on Landing Road in Windham on Sunday when she noticed a duck hanging around a storm drain. Upon investigation, she heard the cries of trapped ducklings coming from inside, according to the Windham Police Department.
Three Windham police officers responded with a pry bar and a net to reunite the ducklings with their mother.
Officers wrangled nine of the ducklings, but one ended up inside pipes buried deep underground. The officers, however, managed to eventually get the duckling into the net and reunite it with its mother at a nearby pond.
This bout with the storm drain ended well for the ducklings thanks to the assist. It’s a scene that’s played out numerous times over the years from Bangor to Rockland to Lewiston and beyond.
It goes to show that when you face off against your archnemesis, it never hurts to have someone in your corner to scoop you up.
