Police shot a man in downtown Calais who swung a katana-style sword at them.

The shooting happened at about 5:30 p.m. on the corner of North and Main streets, The Calais Advertiser reported.

The Advertiser posted a video that shows three police officers yelling at a man, who is seated on a parked scooter. One of the officers grabs the man and pulls him to the ground, at which point the man sits up and swings the sword in a wide arc as the police back away from him.

The man throws or drops the sword and three shots ring out in quick succession as the man appears to try to flee. A fourth shot can be heard as the man is falling to the ground where he lies motionless for the final three seconds of the video.

It’s unclear from the video which police agency the officers were from.

Local authorities referred the Bangor Daily News to the Maine attorney general’s office, which investigates police use of deadly force. The AG’s office did not immediately respond to a request for information.
