BELFAST – On Sunday, June 14 Belfast Flying Shoes presents an English country dance with one of the nation’s most sought-after dance leaders, Joanna Reiner Wilkinson of Philadelphia. She will call the dances to live music by Jessie Boardman on violin and Daniel Raine on guitar and cittern. Join the fun from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 37 Miller St. in Belfast. Admission is $15-25 and includes punch and crunch.
The program begins with a brief intro session to welcome those who are new to English country dance or ECD. ECD is a folk tradition similar to our local contra dance culture, emphasizing both participatory dancing and live music, with partners and neighbors dancing together in a set. The June 14 dance marks the culmination of our six month series of dances. With Joanna, Jessie & Raine, dancers will celebrate the culture of joyful English dancing that the series nurtured.
The UU Church is an accessible venue. Admission is sliding scale $15-25. All are welcome! More information is at belfastflyingshoes.org.
Founded in 2005, Belfast Flying Shoes builds community and cultivates well-being through the joy of traditional music and dance for people of all backgrounds and identities in Midcoast Maine. Among the nonprofit’s diverse programs is a monthly podcast featuring contra dance musicians.
