For the Orono High School girls outdoor track team, winning a state Class C title is expected.
Not so for the Bangor Christian boys.
But the Bangor Christian boys used depth to capture their first ever state C championship on Saturday in Winslow while the Orono girls rode a magnificent 38-point performance from senior Easnadh Nobel To’olo to their sixth state crown in seven years.
To’olo’s 38 points were more than 24 of the 33 schools involved in the meet.
Orono tallied 91 points to cruise to the victory. Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield and Winslow finished second and third with 62.16 and 53 points, respectively. Rounding out the top 10 were Bangor Christian (48), Bucksport (44), George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill (43), North Yarmouth Academy (41.16), Boothbay Region/Wiscasset (39), Lisbon/Oak Hill (36.16) and Maranacook of Readfield (3).
To’olo won the 100 meter hurdles in 15:58, the long jump (17-00) and the triple jump in 36-03, and she finished second in the long jump (17-00).
She was complemented by senior teammate Maya Boyington, who won the 3200 in 11:19:31; and finished second in the 1600 to Madison’s Bryanna Hagopian (5:08.51) and teamed with Nina Mitchell, Clara White and Sophie Kulikowski to win the 4 by 800 relay (10:23.43).
Orono freshman Sam Reidy won the 800 in 2:27:49, and GSA sophomore Ripley King-Ofsiany set a state C meet record in the 400 (58:36).
Piscataquis Community High School of Guilford senior Ava Goulette and Traip Academy of Kittery sophomore Jacqueline Diallo each won two individual events. Goulette won the shot put (36-04.50) and the discus throw (107-04) while Diallo won the 100 (12:45) and 200 meter dashes (25:53).
The other winners were Bangor Christian’s Mary Allen (46:37), who won the same event last year for Central High of Corinth; the Boothbay Region/Wiscasset 4-by-100 relay team of Olivia Rittal, Nerla Laventure, Moriah Smith and Rose Campbell (52:26); Bucksport’s 4 by 400 relay team of Chloe Meshey, Haley Rose, Alvah Tweedie and Madison Rose (4:19.70); Seacoast Christian of South Berwick’s Audrey O’Meara in the long jump (17-07); Maranacook’s Evelyn Stevenson in the high jump (5-03); Lisbon/Oak Hill’s Jillian Smith in the javelin (113-01); and Branwyn Obptande in the 1600 race walk (8:28:40).
In the boys meet, senior Jesse Booker won the 300 meter hurdles in 40:38 and was one of three Patriots who finished in the top six in the 110 meter hurdles as he placed second behind Winslow’s Hassan Hobi (15:11). BC’s Samuel Whitcomb was third, and Isaac DelMonaco was sixth.
BC registered 59 points to best Wells by 13 points and Winthrop by 14. BC had eight top five finishes.
Completing the top 10 in the 31-team field were George Stevens Academy (43), Winslow (41), Lisbon/Oak Hill (40), Fort Fairfield (39), Dexter (35.50), Bucksport (34) and Mountain Valley of Rumford (31).
Junior William Morris of Dixfield’s Dirigo High won the 800 (1:57:11), the 1600 (4:29.76) and the 3200 (9:52.46). Wells sophomore Adam Wells captured the 100 (11:59) and 200 (23:14).
The other individual winners were Fort Fairfield’s Ethan Walsh in the high jump (6-0), Bucksport’s Aven Laplant in the pole vault (12-06), GSA’s Reese Renwick in the long jump (20-05), Dexter’s Damian Miller in the triple jump (42-09) and teammate Brady Jerome in the shot put (47-02.75), Madison’s Skye Burgoyne in the discus (137-80), Winthrop’s Jacob Feith in the javelin (165-00) and Orono’s David Brewer in the 1600 race walk (7:19.1).
The relay winners were Narraguagus High of Harrington in the 4-by-100 with the team of Christian Garcia, Carson Bickford, Brae-den Sonthonax and Ripley Strout posting a time of 46:07; Winthrop’s Connor Hachey, Ben Cheng, Travis Donovan and Alfie Cognata clocking a 3:35:58 to win the 4-by-400; and Houlton/Greater Houlton Christian Academy’s James Brady, Nathan Brady, Malachi Witmer and Brayden Drake notching a time of 8:29:07 in the 4 by 800.
