In 1776, our nation was founded on the principle of self-government, the idea that power comes from the people. Today, many Americans from across the political spectrum feel that promise slipping away.
Elections dominated by unlimited spending and foreign influence leave many citizens confused, frustrated and mistrustful of government. The very foundation of our republic erodes. This is not a partisan issue. It’s a question of whether our system still reflects the will of the people.
Most Americans agree on the need for change. Across party lines, there is growing support for a constitutional amendment that would restore the ability of Congress and the states to set reasonable limits on money in our elections. In fact, 25 states, including Maine, have officially called for such an amendment.
Let’s make this anniversary about deciding what comes next. As we mark 250 years of independence, will we meet our obligation as citizens to engage our government so it is truly of, by, and for the people?
I encourage my fellow Mainers to learn more about this vital issue and urge our members of Congress to support a constitutional amendment that will restore the ability of Congress and the states to set reasonable limits on election spending.
