The state fire marshal’s office on Thursday identified a woman who died in a Fort Kent house fire earlier in the week.

The fire at 42 East Main St. was reported shortly after noon on Monday. Firefighters found Ruth Charles, 56, of Fort Kent, in a first-floor apartment, where she lived alone. Lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful, the fire marshal’s office said in a news release.

Investigators determined that the fire started in the bedroom of Charles’ apartment and was caused by a candle or something electrical.

Two other tenants of the building were temporarily displaced, the fire marshal’s office said.
