An Augusta man has been charged with manslaughter after allegedly driving 123 mph shortly before a crash that killed another driver.
John Stratton Jr., 22, was indicted for manslaughter, two counts each of aggravated assault and driving to endanger, as well as one count of reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon in Kennebec County Superior Court on Thursday.
He was arraigned Monday and pleaded not guilty to all six charges, according to Kennebec County Superior Court clerks.
Stratton is accused of killing Steven Greene, 76, of Massachusetts in a crash on Aug. 23 on Route 202 in Winthrop.
He was allegedly driving a Ford Mustang when a Winthrop police officer clocked him going 123 mph in a 45 mph stretch of road, according to the Kennebec Journal.
The officer wasn’t able to catch up to the Mustang, but came across a crash involving that vehicle and two others. The Mustang hit a pickup driven by Greene, who was thrown from his vehicle.
Greene died at the scene. Stratton and two of his passengers were severely injured and taken to hospitals at the time.
Stratton is in the Kennebec County Jail. No court date was listed in court records.
