A Maine Department of Transportation worker was hospitalized on Wednesday afternoon after being being struck by an SUV on Interstate 295 in Gardiner.

The crash was reported at 1:43 p.m. on the northbound side of the highway.

Based on a preliminary investigation, Maine State Police said three DOT workers were removing tire debris from the roadway. Two workers were in a truck in the breakdown lane with amber warning lights on.

A third worker, a 57-year-old Lewiston man, got out of the truck to remove debris near the right-hand fog line when he was hit by a 2021 Cadillac SUV driven by a 39-year-old Gardiner woman, police said.

The worker was taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. The crash remains under investigation, police said.
