Someone who supports American families and the children from which they rise in our society ought reasonably to want full and unfettered health care access for all American women of childbearing age.
How does Sen. Susan Collins sleep at night knowing about the death and harm to young women who had no help or hope because of her vote for Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh? Susan Collins was 20 years old when Roe v. Wade was decided. Do you think she ever feared an unplanned pregnancy given her professional ambitions? She likely knew then that we had finally been given protected, full legal autonomy over our own bodies.
I shudder to think about the young women who cannot rely upon that because of Collins proudly voting for Kavanaugh. I believe she is not working for her female constituents.
They have a far healthier view of themselves as self-possessed women. Maybe Collins doesn’t realize that Millennial women and Gen Z women, the cohort born after Collins’ first year in public office, are used to owning their bodies? This level of cruelty makes it stunningly clear to me that she should be voted out of public office.
Graham Platner’s promise to fight for full access to healthcare for every American is exactly what I think is needed in this moment. And, as he says, we’re just getting started. As for Maine, so for America.
