There are thousands of homes for sale across Maine today, and you don’t have to settle for a typical single-family house.
The real estate market in Maine has grown more expensive since the pandemic and there’s more competition for all kinds of properties, but not every home will appeal to a wide range of buyers.
We found three properties for sale that range in price, size and location, but stand out for their unique designs, characteristics and history.
A lighthouse outhouse in Canton, $550,000
This one-room stone cabin on a small island in the middle of Lake Anasagunticook comes with its own lighthouse.
Built in 1937, the cabin offers 480 square feet of living space with an open floor plan that includes a kitchen, fireplace, living space and room to sleep five people, according to the property listing.
The home in Canton, which is being sold furnished, hit the market on June 18 with an asking price of $550,000.
The cabin has solar panels on the roof with a battery, as well as a gas generator, which power the lights, air conditioner and refrigerator. There’s also an outdoor shower and the lighthouse holds a composting toilet.
The nearly .2-acre island is accessible only by boat, so there are docks both on the island and the mainland.
A Quonset hut in Winslow, $295,000
Perched near the edge of Pattee Pond in Winslow, this Quonset hut on a half-acre lot offers 2,210 square feet of living space under its semicylinder roof.
Built in 2021, the one-bedroom, one-bathroom property features an open floor plan with a wood interior and towering ceilings. The first level offers radiant heat in the floor, heat pumps, ample living and storage space and sauna.
A large loft with a catwalk, accessible by a spiral staircase, holds a sleeping space, bathroom, additional living space and a wide deck with views of the pond.
The property was listed on May 22 for $295,000, according to Zillow records.
A former schoolhouse in Rockport, $1.5 million
What was once the Rockport School House has been thoroughly renovated to become a four-bedroom, three-bathroom home near Rockport Harbor.
Built in 1865, the three-story house offers more than 5,330 square feet of living space with wraparound covered decks on both the first and second floor that overlook the harbor.
The third floor holds a primary bedroom with a private bathroom and large closet, as well as an office space. The first floor, meanwhile, offers space for two bedrooms as well as a library and recreation room.
The property’s many other features include wood floors, stained glass windows, towering ceilings and a clock tower on the roof. The home is also part of a nine-residence condominium association but has its own entrance, parking and private yard.
The home hit the market on May 23 with an asking price of $1.5 million. It was previously for sale in 2023 and 2024 for $2.2 million and $1.8 million, respectively, but appears to not have sold, Zillow records show.
