The Internal Revenue Service will temporarily reopen its Taxpayer Assistance Center in Bangor from Tuesday, July 21 through Thursday, July 23, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.
The center, located at the Margaret Chase Smith Federal Building, 202 Harlow St., Suite 20300, will offer tax law assistance, account assistance, payment arrangements, transcripts and forms. Payments will be accepted.
Visitors should bring a current government-issued photo ID (such as a driver’s license), any letters or notices received, and any requested documents
The temporary reopening coincides with deadlines for several 2nd quarter filings.
The Bangor center was open in 2025 but closed ahead of the major spring filing deadline this year. Prior to that, it had been open intermittently. Another Taxpayer Assistance Center in Augusta was also closed earlier this year. A center in Presque Isle closed in 2018.
The IRS currently lists just one Taxpayer Assistance Center in Maine with regular hours, in South Portland.
In a 2005 notice of Taxpayer Assistance Center closures across the country, the IRS cited “fundamental changes in how taxpayers file their taxes and access tax information.” It was the first year in which more tax returns were filed electronically than on paper, the IRS said.
