As Maine’s coordinator for an organization that makes quilts for veterans, and as the wife of a Navy veteran, I support Sen. Susan Collins because of her longstanding record of advocating for veterans.

Throughout her career, Collins has demonstrated respect and gratitude for the sacrifices veterans have made in service to our country. She has worked to secure funding for improved healthcare, expanded housing opportunities, and other resources that help veterans and their families.

In contrast, her opponent, Graham Platner, has reportedly described America as the “evil bad guy overseas” while explaining his decision to keep a Nazi tattoo. Those comments reflect a worldview that I believe is out of step with the values and service of the men and women who have defended our nation.

I was pleased to see Collins recently announce a veterans coalition. To me, this demonstrates her continued commitment to listening to veterans, understanding their needs, and delivering results on their behalf.

It is often said that without our veterans, we would not enjoy the freedoms and opportunities we have today. Collins clearly understands that. I believe she carries that appreciation with her every day as she serves the people of Maine, and I encourage veterans and their families to support her this fall.
