A driver died Saturday morning after a vehicle crossed the center line and struck an apartment building on Route 115 in Windham, triggering a natural gas leak that prompted evacuations in the area, according to police.
The crash occurred at approximately 7:41 a.m. on Tandberg Trail, when the vehicle struck the building’s natural gas meter, causing a significant leak.
Building residents — along with those of several nearby homes — were evacuated as a precaution while crews worked to secure the scene, police said.
Route 115 was temporarily closed and emergency crews disconnected power to portions of town as a safety precaution.
The identity of the driver is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The crash remains under investigation.
