Supreme Court decisions are often couched in language that makes it hard for laypeople to grasp the arguments that led to the decision. However, the recent Supreme Court decision concerning birthright citizenship lays bare the cynicism of four of the Republican-appointed justices.
The U.S. Constitution states: “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.” It doesn’t seem like this leaves much room for interpretation, but four justices managed to conclude that there is no birthright citizenship in the Constitution.
I believe it is time for voters to choose representatives who will forcefully reform the Supreme Court to put an end to this court’s repeated outrages.
