Yesterday, an angler from Porter caught a 16.34-pound, 37-inch lake trout on Moosehead Lake. This morning, another trophy fish was landed there.
Deanna Miles of Sangerville was fishing with Harold King, owner of Moosehead Area Guide Services, when she landed an 18.28-pound trout measuring 37.5 inches long with a 21⅜-inch girth.
The fish was weighed on an official scale at Indian Hill Trading Post.
King said they were trolling with downriggers in about 140 feet of water. Recent hot weather sent heat index values into the 95- to 100-degree range, and as surface temperatures climb, cold-water fish such as lake trout generally move deeper. Moosehead Lake has a maximum depth of 246 feet.
Last week, another client of the guide service landed a 14-pound lake trout.
While ice-out often produces a handful of large lake trout, anglers are clearly still finding success this summer by targeting fish near the bottom. “The fishing has been great,” King said.
