The Maine Democratic Party sent the following memo to state committee members on Tuesday promising updates later in the day on the process of potentially replacing U.S. Senate candidate Graham Platner.
Dear Members of the Democratic State Committee,
I want to start by recognizing that this is a very important moment that we are in as Mainers and as Maine Democrats. The eyes of the nation are on us. I am incredibly proud of our Party for standing up for our values and my heart is with the women who made the brave decision to come forward – and with all survivors who may be hurting in this moment.
I am reaching out to provide an update regarding the process to select our Democratic nominee for the United States Senate.
As you know, this is an unprecedented situation. Since this story broke late yesterday afternoon Party leadership has been working around the clock to evaluate the options available to us. We are in ongoing consultation with legal counsel to ensure that every process we consider undertaking is fully consistent with Maine law and the Maine Democratic Party Charter. Until we have a complete understanding of the full range of legally permissible options, it would be premature to share details. To the degree we can control it, this process must be free of misunderstanding and misinformation.
We understand that many of you have questions about what comes next. We ask for your patience as this work continues. Our goal is to move thoughtfully, deliberately, and as quickly as the circumstances allow.
What I will say right now is this: whatever process is ultimately adopted must reflect our Democratic values. It should be open, inclusive, transparent, and fair. You can expect that the processes we will consider will be grounded in those values. The integrity of the process is just as important as the outcome, and we are committed to ensuring that Democrats across Maine can have confidence in both.
You, as members of the Democratic State Committee, will be critical partners throughout this process. Your leadership and engagement will be essential. We are grateful for your commitment to our Party and to the principles that unite us.
As of the current moment, Graham Platner is still the nominee, but, you can expect a more substantial update on this process later today.
While stressful, this is also an opportunity to demonstrate the strength of our Party and our commitment to conducting ourselves with integrity.
In solidarity,
Devon Murphy-Anderson
