A fire destroyed a Lewiston apartment building Sunday afternoon.
The blaze broke out about 4 p.m. at the 20-unit apartment building on Main Street, according to Shannon Moss, a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
When they arrived, firefighters saw flames shooting up the building’s side decks, Moss said Monday.
More than 10 departments from towns across Greater Lewiston rushed to aid the city’s firefighters.
No tenants were injured in the blaze, but one firefighter suffered minor injuries during the battle.
The building was a total loss. That’s displaced 32 people, who are being assisted by the Red Cross, ABC affiliate WMTW reported.
Investigators determined that improperly discarded smoking material on the first-floor deck started the fire, which was ruled accidental.
