When I first heard Graham Platner speak last March, the phrase that caught my attention was: “This country’s problems are not left or right, they are up and down.” However, America has one problem more serious than billionaires exploiting the rest of us: impunity.
To me, earlier examples of Platner’s behavior did not rise to the level of disqualifying him for office. However, the latest allegations of rape certainly do. I believe Platner has to face consequences for this.
If it were not for impunity — and tipping the scales of justice in favor of men, the rich, and the connected — our country would not be in its current mess. So, with regret, but without hesitation, I have stopped contributing to Platner’s campaign. Platner was right to step down. Now, I hope the Democratic Party will nominate someone to focus on America’s real problems: both impunity and kleptocracy.
As for Platner, the latest articles do not indicate that he has taken this opportunity to examine his behavior. I hope he’ll do so and dedicate his organizing talents to address date rape and domestic violence. Our state is rife with these crimes, and it would be the one way I believe he could redeem himself in public service while demonstrating regret for his behavior.
