A boil water order will remain in place for parts of Bangor until at least Friday morning.

That order was prompted by a water main break, which is affecting about 900 customers, according to Bangor Water District General Manager Chuck Harrison.

Most of the affected customers are on or adjacent to Broadway and Essex Street.

The district has taken five samples and is awaiting test results to determine whether bacteria are present in the water. That will take 18 hours, Harrison told the Bangor Daily News on Thursday morning.

It’s not yet known what caused the water main to fail, the third to happen in the area recently. Harrison said that the district’s records show the pipe was installed in 1970. An investigation is underway to determine what went wrong.

The water main break has created minor disruptions for some businesses. Governor’s Broadway restaurant remains open, but it is currently using bottled water for cooking and giving customers single-use tableware, a spokesperson told the BDN. The restaurant can’t sell fountain soda and must buy ice while the boil water order remains in place.

Harrison said affected customers should keep an eye on the district’s Facebook page or its website bangowater.org. Otherwise, district employees will go door to door in the affected area to inform customers when the order is lifted.
