Maine on Saturday will get a small taste of the smoke from Canadian wildfires that turned skies apocalyptic orange from Minnesota to Maryland.
Particulate pollution will be slightly elevated statewide, posing risks for sensitive groups, including people with heart or lung disease, older adults, asthmatics and people who work outdoors, according to the Maine Department of Environmental Protection. Teenagers and children should also reduce prolonged or heavy exertion.
The DEP advises that it is OK to be active outside, but recommends taking more breaks, doing less intense activities, and watching for symptoms such as coughing or shortness of breath.
Ozone is expected to be “moderate,” an elevated rating, in the midcoast, the southern coast, the western interior and at high elevations, according to the DEP.
