Alex Gettens has been named to the position of head coach of the University of Maine’s women’s ice hockey team, the school announced Monday.
A former Maine assistant coach, Gettens most recently was an assistant coach at Colgate University for two seasons.
He previously spent six seasons at Vermont, serving as an assistant coach before being promoted to associate head coach for the 2023-24 season. During the 2017-18 season, he was an assistant coach at UMaine, working primarily with goaltenders.
Gettens, who is from Concord, New Hampshire, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in community entrepreneurship from the University of Vermont in 2017. He began his coaching career in 2011 with the St. Paul’s School girls’ ice hockey team, helping the squad to a New England Prep School Championship in 2015.
University of Maine Vice President and Director of Athletics Jude Killy cited Gettens’ “unbridled enthusiasm and vision of comprehensive excellence for our program and his plan to get there,” and said his familiarity with Hockey East and the Northeast, and his previous time at Maine “are all bonuses.”
Gettens becomes the eighth head coach of the UMaine women’s ice hockey team. His salary is $135,000, which is the same as his predecessor, Molly Engstrom, at the time of her departure, according to UMaine.
