Hackers may have accessed sensitive patient information at Penobscot Valley Hospital in Lincoln.
The hospital began informing affected patients Tuesday, it said in a statement.
Penobscot Valley Hospital learned of suspicious activity in its network on Jan. 28 and took immediate action to secure its network and informed law enforcement.
The subsequent investigation found that hackers may have accessed patients’ addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, and medical and financial information.
“Penobscot Valley Hospital takes this incident very seriously and sincerely regrets any concern this incident may cause. To help prevent something like this from happening again, Penobscot Valley Hospital has implemented additional safeguards and technical security measures to further protect and monitor its systems,” the hospital said in a statement.
The hospital urged patients to take advantage of its complementary identity monitoring service and to monitor any statements from their providers and health plans to watch for unauthorized activity,
