An adult from Lincoln County has tested positive for the Powassan virus.
It’s the third confirmed case so far this year, according to the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention. The other two cases were in York and Penobscot counties.
The tick-borne disease is rare but can be fatal. Symptoms include fever, headache, vomiting and weakness, and it can progress to brain and spinal cord inflammation.
Public health officials advise anyone experiencing these symptoms to contact a medical provider.
