NORTHPORT, Maine — A Friendship man died and his wife seriously injured in a head-on crash July 15 on Route 1 in Northport.

At approximately 11:48 a.m., the Waldo County Regional Communications Center received a report of a two-vehicle crash on Atlantic Highway in Northport. Members of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office, Maine State Police, local fire departments and emergency medical services responded to the scene.

The initial investigation indicates that a 2023 Dodge Promaster cargo van operated by Robert Lary, 77, of Friendship was traveling south. Lary died as a result of his injuries in the crash. Sherry Lary, 72, of Friendship was a passenger in his vehicle and sustained serious injuries. She was transported by ambulance for medical treatment.

Drexel Bailey, 56, of Northport was operating the 2023 Ford F-350 and had Peter Bailey, 40, of Northport as a passenger. Neither of them was injured.

Circumstances surrounding the contributing factors to the crash remain under investigation, however, no criminal behavior is suspected. Maine State Police assisted on scene with providing a forensic map and crash reconstruction.
