Firefighters’ quick response on Wednesday prevented a shed fire at Cross Lake from severely damaging an adjacent home, a North Lakes Fire and Rescue official said.
The fire started in a shed at 2297 Caribou Road on property owned by Leo Trudel, Chief Darren Woods said in a release.
North Lakes, which covers several lakeside areas between Caribou and the St. John Valley, responded with 11 firefighters and the Maine Forest Service about 7 p.m. after receiving a 911 call.
“The quick call to 911 that initiated our response likely saved the structure and the nearby wood line,” Woods said. “If the resident had not called us so quickly, this would have been a very different outcome.”
Early reporting is critical in all emergencies, he said.
The flames had started spreading to the surrounding tall grass and were beginning to burn the home, Woods said. The crew protected the home, prevented the grass fire from spreading and contained the flames to the shed, which was destroyed.
Firefighters were at the scene for about an hour. No injuries were reported.
North Lakes and the Maine fire marshal’s office continue to investigate the fire.
