A 3-year-old was being treated at a hospital on Thursday after being poked by a discarded hypodermic needle on the Brewer Riverwalk.
Brewer Police Chief Chris Martin said he learned of the incident from a media posting and tracked down the father of the child.
Workers from several city departments were sent to the waterfront to search for other hazardous materials and found three syringes on the rocks near the shoreline. Martin said it’s not known if the needles had been used at that location or had washed ashore from the river.
Greater Bangor has been the epicenter for an HIV outbreak that has reached 44 cases, primarily in people who are homeless or inject drugs.
“Our thoughts are with the young child and his family,” Martin said.
