A Belfast man allegedly started a fire in a home’s basement Wednesday night.

Christopher Gordon, 18, has been charged with arson, according to Maj. Aaron Turcotte, a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Gordon allegedly started a fire about 8:10 p.m. in the basement of a City Point Road home, where he lived with other family members. The homeowner put out the blaze before firefighters arrived. Crews helped ventilate smoke from the home, Turcotte said Thursday morning.

No one was injured in the fire.

Gordon was taken to the Waldo County Jail, where he was being held without bail because of prior conditions of release.

The investigation is ongoing.
