I take exception to David Wood’s recent opinion column. The candidate selection may not have gone the way the state party and Wood thought it would, but I was very satisfied with the outcome.

I attended the Hancock County Democrats’ meeting the Thursday night before delegate selection. I was somewhat surprised that delegates were not expected to indicate who they supported for a replacement Democratic U.S. Senate candidate. I asked the moderator about this and was told the delegates could indicate preference but the intention was to hear the candidates speechify and then choose.

I was already familiar with the candidates because we just had a hard-fought primary and I knew who I wanted. I also felt that Troy Jackson represented a progressive platform, similar to Graham Platner’s.

I registered to vote to select delegates. Meanwhile, I received a text message from the Jackson campaign with a list of delegates supporting him and these were the delegates I voted for.

The Jackson selection was not part of a political machine. He captured the enthusiasm of those of us who supported Platner, and critically, we paid attention to the process of selection for the replacement.

I really like Jordan Wood, Shenna Bellows, Nirav Shah, and the others. If any of these candidates had been selected, I would work to get them elected to get what I consider the failed incumbent out so we can recover our government.

I believe we need a united effort to defeat Sen. Susan Collins. I think we can win in November if we are united behind Jackson.
