As co-chair of the Advisory Council to the Maine Office of New Americans, I extend my deepest condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero. Communities across Maine are mourning this tragic loss and experiencing profound grief, fear, and uncertainty, especially our immigrant and refugee neighbors.
I respect the integrity of the investigation into this fatal shooting and expect it to proceed with transparency, accountability, and due process. I applaud Gov. Janet Mills’ strong stance on behalf of our rights as Mainers to live in peace and calling for the immediate reform of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
This is a time for visible leadership, meaningful engagement, and open communication. Immigrant communities deserve to know that their concerns are heard, their dignity is respected, and that their voices will help shape the state’s response. Trust is built through proximity, presence, transparency, accountability, and sustained dialogue.
I stand ready to continue supporting the Legislature’s vision to advance opportunity, inclusion, and civic participation for immigrants and refugees throughout Maine. That means engaging directly with affected communities; convening partners across state government, community organizations, and local leaders; identifying barriers that have emerged in the wake of this tragedy; and advising policymakers on actions that promote safety, trust, and belonging for all Maine residents.
I strongly believe that Maine’s future depends on the talents, contributions, and aspirations of people from all corners of the world who have chosen to make this state their home.
