ROCKLAND — The city’s public safety crews were busy Saturday with 10 motor vehicle crashes.
These occurred as the department handled traffic associated with the annual Maine Lobster Festival Parade.
Four of the crashes resulted in injuries, including one at about 6:30 p.m. in which a motorcyclist was injured in a crash with a car on Park Street. That crash resulted in the road being closed during the investigation.
The 20-year-old male motorcycle driver, who was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, was transported to Maine Health Pen Bay Hospital in Rockport with serious and possible life-threatening injury.
Rockland Police Chief Tim Carroll said the vehicles were heading east and a car was turning left with its blinker on but the motorcyclist did not stop and slammed into the rear of the vehicle.
As with all life-threatening injury accidents, the Knox County District Attorney’s Office was notified, Rockland police said. A crash reconstructionist from the Maine State Police responded to assist with the crash investigation which is ongoing.
In total during the day, five people were taken by ambulance to Pen Bay.
Three other crashes resulted in significant damage to vehicles while three others resulted in minor damage to vehicles.
